Neuron (pyramidal cell) from the cortex of a rat, stained by intracellular injection with biocytin; dark field illumination. Several dendrites, studded with dendritic spines, emanate from the cell body (black) and ramify in the upper cortical layers. The axon descends into the opposite direction towards the white matter and ramifies loosely. Synaptic boutons, arranged like pearls on a string, can be recognized along its ramifications. From: Hellwig B. (2000) A quantitative analysis of the local connectivity between pyramidal neurons in layers 2/3 of the rat visual cortex. Biol. Cybern. 82, 111-121, by kind permission of Springer-Verlag, Berlin
