Model of U Geminorum (U Gem). The system is the prototype of the Dwarf Nova class which are variable binary systems containing a white dwarf that erupts periodically and a companion star from which the white dwarf accretes gas. U Gem, which was discovered in 1855 by J. R. Hind, has a red dwarf companion, an orbital period of about 4 hours, and shows outbursts roughly every 100 days. Figure credit: L.
