    Figure 16: The perception of the hole depends on the presence of a surrounding outer square that appears as the surface that contains the hole (Fig. 16a). By removing the outer square, the hole becomes a wiggly small square (Fig. 16b). Under watercolor conditions (Fig. 16c), even a hole alone can assume a figure status: the boundaries of the hole are perceived like the perimeter of an empty space.
