Open or Closed? Contrary to a widespread opinion, the curvature of space dictates neither the time evolution of the Universe (unless the cosmological constant is zero), nor the finite or infinite extent of space (unless the topology is simply-connected). The table summarizes the various cases for FL big bang models. The first column shows the sign of the spatial curvature $k$, the second the finite or infinite character of space, the third the time behavior of the scale factor depending on the cosmological constant $\lambda$, the fourth the open or closed timelike character of the model.
