This is a nice review of the early realization that the strong interactions must have a hidden degree of freedom, i.e. color. Over the years this has evolved into the present elegant understanding of QCD as a non-abelian gauge theory underlying the nuclear force. Crucial steps along this path include the demonstration of renormalizability for non-abelian gauge theories, the discovery that these theories are asymptotically free, and the importance of effects outside the realm of perturbation theory.
