Talk:Luce's choice axiom

The website is confusing but if I am where I think I am this is being entered as my review of the paper on Luce's Choice Axiom.

I had 6 suggestions, all fairly minor, and by the time I was able to complete the review, 5 of the 6 had already been accomplished in modifications of the paper. Luce's Choice Axiom has had a remarkable effect in Marketing and especially in the sub-field of Marketing Research.

This is my only remaining suggestion. In the section on Indpendence From Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA) Luce uses the phrase "...such examples led to various attempts to generalize the axiom ........". I believe this is the most appropriate way to describe models that have been suggested of which the Luce Model is a special case. In the section on Extensions and Applications the article uses the phrase "Most notable are rejections of IIA and attempts to weaken the axiom ......" My suggestion is to also use the phrase "generalize the axiom" here rather than weaken. I believe that the progress of science can be described as the development of more general mathematical models which are capable of explaining a wider variety of behavior. Therefore, models which are more general, and have earlier models as special cases, I would not describe as weaker. Having said this, however, if the author feels that this change should not be made I would defer to the author.

This is my only comment, given the current form of the paper that I read. This paper definitely deserves to be in Scholarpedia because the topic has had a very significant impact in Psychology, Economics, and Marketing.

    Second Referee:

This is an excellent summary of a very important topic. My only suggestion would be that the author rephrase some of the many sentences that are currently in the passive form. This change would further improve readability. Other than that, as expected, this is outstanding work by the world's expert on the topic.
