In the first part, the article mentions dynamical neural fields. Today Dynamical Neural Field Theory is a specific variant of neural field theory focusing more on cognitive models. It may be distinguished from Mathematical Neural Field Theory which focuses on the mathematical properties and the spatio-temporal dynamics.

Loosely speaking, Dynamic Neural Field Theory applies the model equation as major building blocks of (typically) cognitive models, Mathematical Neural Field Theory analyzes the equations to explain physiological phenomena.
