Featured Author: Carmen C. Canavier
Carmen C. Canavier was born in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) in 1957 and was raised in Montgomery, Alabama. She received her B.E. in Chemical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1979, and after working for eight years with Shell Oil Company she joined the graduate program in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University, receiving her Ph.D. in 1991. After postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston (UTHSC-H), and at Baylor School of Medicine, she joined the Faculty of the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at UTHSC-H in 1995. In 1997 she moved to the Department of Psychology at the University of New Orleans, becoming an Associate Professor in 2001. In 2005 she moved to the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at New Orleans, where she now holds the position of Associate Professor of Neuroscience and Ophthalmology.
Dr. Canavier's research is in the nonlinear dynamics of neurons and small networks, which she has pursued through two lines of research. The first looks at phase locking in small networks of neurons using the phase resetting technique. Her second line of research looks at the biophysics of different neuronal firing patterns, such as regular pacemaker firing, burst firing and irregular firing. This line of research is currently focused on the activity of dopaminergic neurons of the mammalian midbrain.
