Born on the 27th of September 1952 in Haubourdin (Nord), France, Dr. Didier Dubois received his Civil Engineering degree in Aeronautics from France's ENSAE (École Nationale Supérieure de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace) in Toulouse, earning his Doctorate in Engineering from ENSAE in 1977, and a second Doctorate in Sciences (Thèse d'état) from the University of Grenoble (in 1983). Dubois received his Habilitation from University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse in 1986.

In 1984 Dr. Dubois began work as a CNRS Researcher in Toulouse University, and in 1991 he was appointed as the CNRS Research Advisor (Directeur de Recherche) at IRIT (Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse) in University Paul Sabatier. Dubois has been a President of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (1995-1997) and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Fuzzy Sets and Systems since 1999.

Dr. Dubois received a Doctorate honoris causa from Faculté Polytechnique de Mons (Belgium) in 1997. Apart from being a Fellow of International Fuzzy Systems Association (1999), he was acknowledged in 2001 by ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) among the 300 most cited French scientists. In 2002 Dubois received the Pioneer Award from IEEE Neural Network Society (for his work in possibility theory and fuzzy logic).

Dr. Dubois is the co-author, with Dr. Henri Prade, of two books on fuzzy sets and Possibility Theory and 12 edited volumes on uncertain reasoning and fuzzy sets. Also with Prade, Dubois coordinated the Handbook of Fuzzy Sets series published by Kluwer (seven volumes, 1998-2000, two of which Dubois co-edited). Dubois has contributed more than 200 technical journal papers on theories of uncertainty, non-monotonic reasoning, operations research, and decision theory and applications. Among Dubois' greatest contributions is his work with Prade on the foundations of Possibility Theory for the modeling of incomplete knowledge, how possibility theory links with knowledge representation in artificial intelligence, as well as possibility theory's connections to probability theory and interval analysis and the construction of a possibility-based decision theory.
