Dr. Fred H. "Rusty" Gage (b. October 5th, 1950 in Portsmouth, VA) received his bachelor's of science degree from the University of Florida, going on to earn a Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University in 1976. At the Lund University, Sweden, Dr. Gage completed his post-doctoral work with the direction of Anders Bjorklund. In 1995 he joined the Salk Institute, CA, USA where he serves as both Professor in the Laboratory of Genetics as well as Vi and John Adler Chair for Research on Age-Related Neurodegenerative Diseases.
Dr. Gage is the recipient of many awards, including the Max Plank Research Prize in 1999 for his role in the discovery of neurogenesis, plasticity and adaptability in the adult human brain. He has also served as President of the Society for Neuroscience (2001), and is Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences.
The implications of Dr. Gage and colleague's work go well beyond the academic realm by suggesting the possibility of neuron regrowth after brain damage, a paradigm shifting discovery that has led to new advances in the fields of research and medicine.
