Gheorghe Paun (b. December 6, 1950) is a senior researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy. He is best known for his contributions to formal language theory, DNA computing, and membrane computing research fields (this latter research area was initiated by him, in 1998, see www.ppage.psystems.eu).
Paun received his M.Sc. (1974) in computer science and his Ph.D. (1977) in mathematics, both from the University of Bucharest.
Among his distinctions, awards and honors are: Doctor Honoris Causa of the Pitesti University, Romania (2010), and of the Silesian University of Opava, Czech Republic (2007); Honorary member and Doctor Honoris Causa of the International Academy of Informatization, Chisinev branch (1998); Alexander von Humboldt fellowship at Magdeburg University, Germany; corresponding member of the Romanian Academy (1997); member of the Academia Europaea (2006); member of the International Academy of Mathematical Chemistry (2010).
He is or has been a member of editorial boards of about 20 international computer science journals.
His scientific work is recognized world-wide, his name being included, by Thomson-Reuters Institute for Scientific Information, in the ISI Highly Cited Scientists (http://isihighlycited.com/).
