Lynette Jones obtained her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Auckland in 1976 and 1978, respectively. She then went on to pursue a Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal. After a fellowship at the Montreal Neurological Institute from 1983-1986, she joined the faculty at McGill University where she taught for eight years, receiving an appointment of Associate Professor with tenure at the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy in 1991. In 1994, she moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she is now a senior research scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. She also sits on the Editorial Board for Haptics-e, is Associate Editor-in-chief for the Journal IEEE Transactions on Haptics, Editor-in-chief for the World Haptics Conference Editorial Board, and Associate Editor for Presence, teleoperators and virtual environments.
Dr. Jones has served on numerous national committees, notably the Committee on Space Biology and Medicine of the National Research Council, and the IEEE Symposium on Haptic Interfaces. She also holds two patents, "Apparatus and method for measuring vestibular ocular reflex function." and "Drowsiness/Alertness monitor." Dr. Jones has published over 80 refereed scientific publications. She has also co-authored the acclaimed book 'Human Hand Function' that provides a detailed analysis of the sensory and motor function of the hand.
Her research focuses on a number of areas related to human haptic perception and motor performance. Much of this work is conducted in the context of the design of haptic interfaces that human operators use to interact with computer-generated virtual environments or to control robotic devices, and she is recognized as a leading scientist in this area. Her research group at MIT has built a number of tactile and thermal displays that have been used in academic, industrial, and military settings.
