Prof. Martin Freer was awarded a PhD in 1991 from the University of Birmingham for his work on ‘nuclear clustering’. He then went on to work in the APEX collaboration at the Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, performing some of the definitive measurements on electron-positron emission in heavy-ion collisions, before returning to the UK as an SERC Advanced Fellow in 1993.
Subsequently, he has worked in a variety of areas including nuclear clustering, the structure of matter at and beyond the drip-lines and neutrinoless double-beta decay. In 2005 he was awarded the Humboldt foundation ‘Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Prize’ and in 2010 he was awarded the IoP ‘Rutherford medal’ for his contribution to the field of nuclear clustering.
He is currently the director of the Birmingham Centre for Nuclear Education and Research, which brings together research programmes in nuclear materials, nuclear chemistry, waste management and decommissioning and a range of postgraduate and undergraduate educational programmes.
