Prof. J. Tinsley Oden
The University of Texas at Austin, USA
Curator and author
Featured Author: J. Tinsley Oden
J. Tinsley Oden (b. December 25, 1936) was the founding director of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES), an expansion of the Texas Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics. The Institute offers both academic and research programs in computational engineering and sciences within the University of Texas at Austin.
Oden received his Ph.D. (1962) in engineering mechanics from Oklahoma State University. Before joining the University of Texas at Austin, he taught at Oklahoma State University and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and, as visiting professor, at various universities in the United States, England, and Brazil.
Among his distinctions, awards and honors are: Honorary Doctorates from the Ohio State University (US), Ecole Normale Superieure Cachan (France), Technical University of Lisbon (Portugal), Faculte Polytechnique (Belgium), Cracow University of Technology (Poland); Honorary Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; SIAM Prize in Computational Science, the A. C. Eringen Medal, the Worcester Reed Warner Medal, the Lohmann Medal, the Theodore von Karman Medal, the John von Neumann medal, the Newton/Gauss Congress Medal, and the Stephan P. Timoshenko Medal, as well as fellow of numerous international technical scientific societies.
He is the author of over 500 scientific publications: books, book chapters, conference and journal papers, and monographs, mostly involving the finite element method and applications. Consequently, in 2004 he was listed as one of the the most highly cited researchers in the world in the period 1981-1999 by the International Scientific Index.
Dr. Oden's current research focuses on statistical validation, stochastic models, and uncertainty quantification.
